Penelope hired a boat and sailed down the Peanut Butter River to the Port of Aroma. She traversed the docks, asking workers if they had seen her sister Lulu.
“This is your sister?” said one heavyset dock worker, staring at Lulu’s picture. The dockworker saw a lovely, laughing woman in the photo who seemed free from any cares or worries. He looked up and saw an equally lovely but serious and fastidious woman, staring at him.
“No I haven’t seen her,” said the dockworker. “You might have better luck at the Sleeping Dog. Every dockworker eventually ends up there.”
“Can you tell me where it is approximately on this map?” Penelope asked. She held out a map of the city.
The dockworker scrutinized the map. Most of the port area had been crossed out. He pointed to an unmarked section on the far side of the port.
“Thank you sir,” replied Penelope, handing him a cookie. The dockworker took one bite, smiled, then went on his way.
Penelope hurried along the busy streets as fast as she could. When she reached the Sleeping Dog, she stopped. She watched as someone nailed a poster printout to the door. She moved closer and saw a picture of herself with these words:
WANTED FOR QUESTIONING
BY ORDER OF KING MICHAEL
Penelope lowered her hat. “Well, there’s nothing for it now,” she said out loud. Then she turned the knob and opened the door.
