Penelope easily snuck out of the Sleeping Dog as the men began searching the tavern. She and Lulu had plenty of practice as kids before she landed the job in the palace. When she reached the alley behind the tavern she laughed. “Just like old times Lulu,” she said out loud.
As she walked the docks, she saw her face plastered on every post. To disguise herself, Penelope stole a piece of linen off a clothes line, rubbed her face in dirt, tied the linen around her head like a kerchief, then walked hunched over like an old lady.
When the sun went down, she snuck onto a cargo ship headed for the Islands.
“Your Majesty,” said the Islander guard. “The Visitor is here to see you.”
“Oh,” said King Lee, the ruler of the Islanders. “Send him to my private chambers please.”
“It’s nice to finally meet you in person,” said King Michael’s chamberlain as he entered the small, well-appointed room. “I trust you’ve taken care of Lulu?”
“My pirates will arrive shortly,” King Lee replied. “Why did you come here?”
“Oh, don’t worry,” replied the chamberlain. “No one will know our secret. I’ve been sent to retrieve Penelope. She ran off after her sister when she found your note. This is actually an official visit to pledge your support in finding her.”
“Oh if I find her, I’ll kill her too,” replied King Lee. “That way we’ll just have to go to war with each other won’t we.”
“That’s the idea,” said the chamberlain.
